On Beauty

Keep it simple. Hell would freeze over before I took that advice sartorially but, in the case of skincare, its my mantra.

Tee shirt (20p, jumble sale), Flower power crimplene skirt (hand-made by me using fabric from Linda), Fake Litas (£5, local market), Age 10-11 opaque tights (3 for £1, off the market)
No sooner did I hit 30 than I became plagued with terrible skin, constant breakouts and dry, scaly patches. I wanted to cry every time I caught sight of myself in a mirror. I tried every high-end, over-priced and hyped-up skincare range on the market to no avail. Yes, the packaging looked lovely and the sales assistants were attentive & kind but the spots remained and all the products did were drain my bank account. In the end I chucked the lot away bought a basic range from Superdrug and, I swear, my skin cleared up almost overnight.

I'm no product junkie. This is my bathroom shelf. Own brand body butter, moisturiser, eye make-up remover, eye cream and facial wash  - I don't bother with a scrub, I just wash my face with a flannel. The crystal deodorant lasts a couple of years and the Lush Karma solid shampoo and Jungle conditioner only need replacing every six months.

Here's where I keep (and apply) my make-up.

Linda made me the Vix card and the patchwork hoop. I owe my child-free state to this little chap.

I've never worn foundation. The thought of applying a layer of brown gunk to my face makes me feel a bit queasy. This radiance cream gives my face a golden shimmer and detracts from the flaws.

The shimmery streak on the right is the radiance cream.

Once I find make-up I like I stick with it. I'm not interested in trends, miracle creams or celebrity endorsements although I splashed out on a tube of BB cream from Poundland, which I've yet to try!

I've worn Barry M since it launched in 1982. Its cheap, cruelty free and the colours rock.

These pots of Barry M Dazzle Dust last for years. Tania bought me the liquid eye liner for my birthday. So many strangers have stopped me to ask the brand that I reckon Boots owe me commission.

Subtle colour? Not on your life! Since I went over to the dark side and become a raven-headed bird, vibrant eye shadow has become like crack - I can't live without it. These Sleek palettes are fantastic; cheap, cruelty free and they last for ages. La Dama (my make-up hero) gave me the one on the left.

That No7 shadow was the one I wore on Friday's blog post, it came free with a Boots voucher about three years ago. The cruelty-free Saffron shadows are 99p from an Asian beauty shop in town. I only ever wear crème blusher, never powder.

I always apply my eye shadow with the applicator provided. Brushes are too messy.

I normally use real hair lashes from the Asian beauty shop, which last about a month. These Eylure ones were on offer last time I went shopping so I gave them a whirl. They're not bad but feel quite heavy compared to my usual brand. I don't bother with mascara, I dye my blonde lashes once a month.

This is the only perfume I use, Karma by Lush.

My nails are almost always by Barry M. I'm wearing Mint Green today.

Here's the skirt I'm wearing - as art. I made it on Saturday afternoon and wore it to the pub in the evening. The joy of dressmaking!

This isn't an advertisement for Barry M, Lush or Superdrug! I bought it all myself!

Hope you had a fabulous weekend.

See you soon.

  2. Barry m could not have a better spokesmodel! You are however most beautiful from within; wheres your beauty regimen for that?

  3. Hey, are you giving me a bit of side eye there? If so, I like it! All this colour's sending me a bit frisky. Love the make up and beauty tutorial. And lest you think I'm only paying lip service let me tell you, only today I went out and bought boots own brand hair dye. Because if it's good enough for Vix...well, you know the rest. Your new skirt is fabulous. You have the waist of a sixteen year old. I'm eyeshadow green with envy! Xxxxxxxx

  4. vix you have beautiful skin and that i am an expert on. :)

i too hate the feel of foundation.

  5. No MAC or Chanel or whatever for our Vix! I'm a cheap make-up date too, I cannot believe how expensive some upmarket brands are. You are certainly proof that looking beautiful and colourful needn't be a purse-draining experience, ending in tears and disappointment.
The skirt you made is fabulous, isn't that print great? Linda's card and patchwork are as gorgeous as the fabric, and that little Pill Baby made me laugh!
    Loving beautiful colourful you! xxxx

  6. That skirt is art just like you are beautiful girl! I am learning a lot from you in this dept. I really do keep my makeup simple but I need to find a way to let go of my foundation, I hate my skin without it:( You wear your makeup well in that it totally goes with your whole look, I think mine needs work. I love your vanity and all the bright bits. That Karma perfume by LUSH is my favorite one of theres too, Chris says it's too hippie smelly so I put on a little more :)

LOVE the shot of applying lippy, YOU ARE A HOT WOMAN! you know that????!?!?!?!?!!
I love you as much as the Barry M you turned me onto:)

  7. keep it simple. I can't believe how much woman spend on all that beauty stuff. I stick with the basic items. For my birthday I once bought a $$$ skin cream, I couldn't tell the difference. I love 97cent nail polish, store band cleaning products, and stuff on sale. I do buy $$$ French perfume(it lasts almost 2 years). Love the skirt

  8. ps....I just showed Chris this post and he said your room looks like a film set:) Obviously for a very cool flick!

  10. You're wearing Jeffrey Campbell, I love you now. What a time to click over (found you via Peetee's Place) I swear the same thing happened to me, hit about 35 and you would have thought I just turned 15, it was awful. But mine was bad like really really bad and I've been told I will more than likely be on antibiotics for the rest of my life because of it. If I go off, I get fun stuff like MRSA and infections. Good times. Anyway loved reading about your routine and you are gorgeous dahlink!

  15. You're a gorgeous endorsement for these products, Vix. I keep my face simple too, with just moisturizer/sunscreen and a little blush. I do love those vibrant lip colors. xox

  17. Keeping it simple ... and you look fab! I can't bear foundation either but CAN NOT EVER go out without my lippy and eyeliner! Cold water splashed on my face morning and night and cheapo moisturiser have always worked for me.
    Love that skirt!

  18. I use some of the exact same products as you Vix (I also use Superdrug Tea Tree spot cream for monthly breakouts). I like the shimmer cream but once my husband thought it was a normal moisturiser and borrowed some for his dry face. It wasn't until he was on the train to work and noticed his hands were sparkly that he realised his mistake (his face was sparkly too) haha. V xxx
p.s. I haven't been to the Post Office yet, so sorry we have all been down with a bad cold.

  20. The first thing that caught my eye was that little flower skirt. So fun! It reminds me of the great clothes I had when I was a kid to dress up my barbie. You are the living version.

I find that solid shampoo and conditioner interesting. I use a colour intensifying shampoo for my red hair. Like you I don't buy anything that can't be bought at my local grocery store.

I cannot find eyelash dye here. Do you brush it on like mascara? How I desperately need some. My lashes are invisible, so blond.

Also I seem to have allergies to lots of makeup and products. My skin is crazy sensitive. I have rosacea and everything bothers it. Especially red wine (boo hoo)

Your skin sure looks great so your regime obviously works for you.

    Interesting post.

    bisous

I'll have to look into that deoderant. Is it healthier than other brands? I already love it if it lasts for years.
I'm a fan of Wilkinsons 98p range of skincare. Expensive stuff is for mugs. xxx

  22. Today I am super loving that shade of leggings and the fabulous shoes ~ but being the nature nut I am I can tend to be a bit of a greenie fanatic at times .lol

  23. That skirt is great! I don't buy expensive make-up or skincare products either - I couldn't afford to and why spend so much when there are so many great economical products out there.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I need to get posting again! I think I'll get on the superdrug basics range... especially the Vit E. I love that Asian or Afro beauty shop, we don't have one, someone's missing out. You look great, that skirt fabric is fantastic!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Great colours Vix! I had stacks of Barry M nail varnishes as a teen, they did the best colours! X

  26. I used to do events for the posh cosmetics labels and got sucked in, ooh so slowly, to buying their overpriced crap. That didn't last long. I now use almond oil on my face and I miss my Toronto dollar store cos that's where I'd buy my navy liquid eyeliner that I wear often (have since found it on Ebay).

So, next time I'm in the UK I am checking out Barry M - where do you buy it? Thanks for mentioning the radiance cream at Superdrug. I think you featured it a while back and I meant to write it down. I mix a cheapie BB cream with a slightly creamy-iridescent eye cream to cover my red bits and get a bit of glimmer, yet light coverage. Will try yours the next time I'm around!

Your skirt is lovely - has a patchwork vibe, another style obsession. Xoxo

  29. My indulgence is a decent lipstick but seeing as I buy one every 2/3 months I don't mind so much - I'm with you on the skin care, mines very basic, oil (currently baby oil) and nivea, I do like the idea of the Lush solid shampoo, we go through way too much shampoo here (3 daughters with long hair!)- Love the pics of you and your 'art' skirt!!

  30. Brilliant post, petal and funnily enough I'm with you all the way. My mum always spanked a fortune on high end creams, and lotions but I could never bring myself to do likewise. I swear by Superdrugs vitamin E cream and have used it for years. I alsp like Aldi's night cream and hand cream. My make up is mostly Mua and Barry M....couldn't live without the blusher or the multitude of nail polishes.
Lov ethat skirt and your wondrous pins...gorgeous you are.

I love the skirt, so you. x

  35. Barry M owe you a bloody comission!!! I just wish we could bloody get it here!
I'm pretty much the same, I have had much of my makeup for years, I don't buy anything flash except for one Mac lippie I treated myself to in Portland as it was waaaay cheaper than here or duty free. My skincare is a local brand or an Australian brand, both inexpensive, plus I make my own. And I just use jasmine oil for fragrance. Can't believe what women waste their money on!!!!
LOVE the skirt!! Such awesome fabric! It'll look divoon with knee boots too! HOTNESS!

  37. I think our equivalent of Barry M might be Wet-n-Wild...I use their brown eyeliner and buy their crazy colored nail polish. I use coconut oil as a face and body moisturizer. I also buy auburn mascara from Just For Redheads. Love your green eyeshadow! You always look the best :)

  38. You somehow manage to make everything you write about so interesting! I enjoyed the post a lot! Love your outfit - green is so beautiful on you, and your shoes are stunning! The skirt is absolutely lovely - such a pretty pattern, and you made in one afternoon, that's amazing! You glow, Vix - and I have to agree with Bella this is from within! You are such a beautiful and harmonious woman, and I love your simple approach to skin care. Mine is pretty simple too. I use Nivea as moisturizer (face, body, hands). I only haven't figure out how to deal with rough skin on my heels. Maybe you have insight for that too. I'd love to learn! Hugs!

  39. I love Karma by Lush. I also love American Cream, mmm. I have to be so careful what I put on my skin these days. I have so many allergies and am prone to major skin irritation. Most days I don't bother with make up for that reason but when I go out out I always make up for it with lots of colour. MUA is great. Dirt cheap and loads of colour variety. Also available in Superdrug! x

  41. My skin care regime consists of a teatree oil face wash foam from Superdrug. I don't bother with anything else most of the time as I have found this works the best and mositurisers give me spots. I have never tried Barry M make up but definitely tempted by those amazing colours and have been meaning to try the Lush perfume.

    Love the colourful skirt!

  44. I love the skirt!!!!!!!!!!! I recently simplified my make-up. Started to realise there was only a real handful of stuff I use constantly. I am an eye-liner junkie!!! Just switched from pencils to liquid and I basically apply it with a paintbrush :D Might have to order some of your tried and trues and check 'em out!

  45. I am awfully basic on the make up front. I wash my face with a face cloth and warm water twice a day and wear Nivea face cream. If feeling pale I have now found BB cream works wonders. Occasionally I put on mascara and eye liner and a bit of lippy but I am pretty low key there. You always look amazing, so thanks for sharing your secrets.

  46. Such bright personality like you, Vix, needs bright colours, in make-up too. This colourful palette looks great on you. Many women ask me what I do with my face that it looks so good (for my age). The fact is that I do nothing. No scrubbing, no polishing, no massaging, no facial...or whatever else. I use just a simple moisturizer and a loose powder. So, I agree with you - keep it simple.

  47. Hey Vix. I really enjoyed this blog. It was so much fun looking at your vanity table, makeup, polishes and the way you organize all that fun stuff. It makes me want to hang out in your room too. The skirt u made is adorable. You're so cool ;-)

  48. Such happy colours! Just so joyful. Bugger subtlety - who wants people to wonder if you are wearing make-up. I want people to know! I'd love to do away with foundation- maybe that is a goal I can work towards. BTW, that skirt is freaking fab! XXX

    ReplyDelete
  49. I've only just started to use a foundation - of sorts. I mix moisturiser and foundation, about one third foundation - it works nicely for me, just gives a bit of smoothness.

I agree, if you find a product that works, stick to it!

  50. I forgot to say, I have ultra dry skin and use Diprobase (may be dyprobase) as soap and skin cream, it is excellent stuff. It is cheap but my doc gives it to me on prescription which means it's free as I am a sniff over 60!

  51. Despite your fair skin and time in the sun you have no sun spots and no wrinkles! Pfft, some people have all the luck.
I slather on the sun cream and wear a sun hat religiously during the summertime and I am covered in sun spots and wrinkles. Jelly, really jelly.

  54. I'm wearing more colour on my face now than I did 10 years ago and it makes me feel so happy!! It's you, La Dama and Helga who have inspired me to try out insanely bright, glittery eye shadows. So glad I did, it's changed the way I see the world. I absolutely MUST try the radiance cream, I've always admired your beautiful healthy glow and I too have recently started using cream blush in bright pink ... love it! Your Vix card is so cute and I really enjoyed having a right, good perve at your amazing dressing table and your gams of course! oxoxoxo

  55. I so agree with you on the whole beauty thing, I've filled my bathroom shelf (and more) up with over priced product and the only thing that helps is essential oil..baah! I love bright colours on the eyes, lips and nails..You really should come to Sydney or meet me in India! I'd have so much fun watching you dress-up.

  56. How I enjoy a good old snoop in your makeup drawer so to speak! I purchased my first Barry M nail polish because of you, & now I don't wear anything else. I especially love that orange caddy thing that you store things in. Xx

  57. OMG THERES SO MANY COLOURS! I tend to be quite neutral with my face make up - but go all out with my nails! Right now I'm wearing Hot pink and orange nail polish.

I think I may agree with you on the face care stuff. For years I've used expensive clinique, but I found out recently that they test on animals, and my skin just cant handle it any more. I have so many breakouts despite a little help from the pill, it just wont clear up! I think I may try something from the grocery store next.

Though one of my favourite things to use is a Filipino toner my boyfriend introduced me to. Its called Eskinol and smells like cucumber. My face feels so fresh afterwards!

  58. Such beautiful colours! I've always loved your make up. I tried using a cream blush and just couldn't control it. I think I'm going to give the coloured eyeliner another try. xx

  59. Your pretty green blouse and tights would be perfect for Saint Patrick's Day. I love those shades of green. I also love your colourful Flower power crimplene skirt (your dress-making skills are amazing), your makeup, the wonderful antique mirror (and all the vintage and antique furniture and decor in your home). You're amazingly neat and organised!
The Barry M lipstick colours are fabulous. It's great that they're cruelty free (and hopefully vegan?). The barry M Dazzle dust also look wonderful and I love your colourful array of vibrant eye shadows. I love your Barry M mint green nail polish too.
You've taken good care of your skin with the skincare products you use. You, your outfit and your makeup all look great! Have a fabulous week!

  64. You ARE the Barry M poster girl! I had a little "SQEE" over the skirt (that pattern is brilliant) and your flamenco dollies (I have 3).

I wish I could have your streamlined face routine. I can't wear most eye makeup and mascara because my eyelids are oily, even with primer. My skin is sensitive and there are few moisterizers that don't make me break out. I love lipstick though and have to wear it every day.

  75. I love the tour of your dressing table, and your dressing table as well! Over here, all those items look so exotic ... brands we never see. Our Target stores now have a selection of Boots products, and I've used a few to good effect, but the rest are just for you lucky UK girls!
Love the bright shades ... no one does it like you do.
I'm so taken with your skirt! It's been years, decades even, since I made a whole garment, but I'm going after some mid-length skirts as none are to be found here. Wish me luck, and some muscle memory and old skills wouldn't hurt either.

  76. I love this post. It's reassurance that it doesn't take a lot of $ to take care of our skin. Make up is all the same pretty much except for the labels. Why spend $$$ on Chanel when you can have the same thing for $? I love LUSH products as well. I just discovered the beautiful BIG sea salt shampoo!

  79. A real bird of paradise you are, Vix. In her natural habitat. And revealing all your beauty routines too.

I've never put any make-up foundation on my face either, couldn't stand the thought of it. Now days, I just put on eyeliner and concealer for my ever-present dark circles. And pencil my eyebrows a bit since they've faded away. That's it. No mascara, lipstick, blush, perfume, nail polish. I'm practically naked!

  80. I was struck with a break-out I thought would never go away in my early twenties. Nothing worked until I tried eating nothing but anti-inflammatory foods for a week- this cleared my break-out instantly and set me on a permanent clean-eating path. When I was broken-out I tried the clarisonic and cleansing/toning/moisturizing morning and night, now I eat very healthy, drink lots of water and simply wash at night with dr. bronners (same I use on my whole body) and apply a 100% natural face oil. In the morning I don't wash again, all I do is curl my lashes and go. :D And my skin's never looked better. Simple is best indeed! Loved you post. This is the anti-inflammatory diet I tried if you're curious (years-old post): http://www.thriftcore.com/2011/10/healthy-skin-diet-100-natural-way-to.html
