My Latest 20p Find

1960's Crimplene Dress (20p) and Vintage net gloves (20p)

It's a busy day for us, not only did we go car booting this morning but there's also two jumble sales on. I'm between jumbles at the moment, so I thought you might like to see the dress I picked up from "The Twenty-Pence Man" this morning.

The sign that brings cheer to my life

Yes, there really is a 20p stall at my favourite car boot sale. You name it, Paul's got it, everything from vintage footwear, best selling novels, curtains, handbags, straw donkeys, china tea sets and CDs. He's always got at least two racks jam-packed with all manner of weird and wonderful clothing from Escada to Asda.

When I caught sight of the typically 1960's daisy chain braided sleeve poking out of the dross I almost shoulder-charged a granny to the floor in my eagerness to get at it. After years spent in the catering industry I'm not really a fan of black and white but perfect fit swayed me. Being glorious crimplene it was dry within an hour of washing it, too.

Needless to say the lounge is looking a bit like a jumble sale with my heaps of purchases scattered everywhere and there's still another one to go.

Wish me luck, doing battle with the hardcore jumble saleing grannies of Tipton isn't for the faint-hearted.

  3. I had a dress like that when I was little, bell sleeves and just above my knee, mine was all purple and was my 'party dress'

  4. Oooh, I'm jealous that you're "in between" jumbles. They're so few and far between round my way these days and as for 2 in one day AND on a THURSDAY, well that's unheard of. Love the dress. Hope you get loads of bargains at the next jumble.

  5. Awwww, that's adorable. I think I had a blue version, once, a while ago but it was way too big for me and I get overheated in crimplene anyway :(

  6. Excellent Vix. I love the '20p man'. There's one at my local bootie and I bought two beautifully framed pictures from him last year...they could easily have been £40 a go.
Lucky you with the jumblies...they just seemed to have disappeared from this area.xx

  10. That looks lovely on you.

I love car boot sales so much, we have "Petes fill a bag for a pound" at one near us and I normally find a few bits of vintage china (most of this summers finds are still on my dining table waiting to be washed up!)

  11. I bet you love the 20p man! What a complete bargain! That is one very chic dress and it fits you like a glove - crimplene: I love you!
Good luck with those hardcore grannies, if they're anything like the Cheltenham ones they'd give Jackie Chan a run for his money in the elbow in the ribs stakes!

BTW - Thanks for the nail varnish info, I thought it looked like a Barry M colour.

  12. Vix, where does your twenty-pence man get his stuff! That is a gorgeous dress and sets your figure off nicely. Love the addition of the gloves.

I'm guessing crimplene is a polyester fabric and a pence is less than a pound so you got a GREAT deal. I am a lover of black/white and navy blue/white because it has a crisp look and reminds me of my grade school uniform.

Hope you have fun with the grannies at your next jumble stop today.

  28. Can't believe you got this amazing dress for 20p! This is the sort of thing I easily give Topshop £80+ for. It looks stunning on you - fits like a glove and really suits your slim figure. What an incredible bargain. xx
PS You'd be proud of me tonight - I've been to a swishing event so have come home with 3 'new to me' things for free (well, swapped). A totally new (non high street!) experience, great fun.

  30. Dear Vixy,
The Twenty-Pence Man RULES...tell him that he ought to move to London next time you see him will you ;)
I usually have to wait until the end of the sale for anybody to sell stuff that cheaply. Occasionally we get peeps doing 3 items for £1 as the market opens but these stalls rapidly get swamped & as such are very hard to get access to; only merciless Alpha rummagers get a look-in ;)
Still I mustn't grumble; I get my fair share of good deals too.
The dress looks gorgeous on you & I do love the lace gloves too…another amazingly bargainous outfit!
    Luv,
    Jem
    …xXx
P.s. Identical kitchen jars...whatever next, eh! Pictures of your retro & kitsch bits & pieces have definitely inspired me to keep my eyes peeled for such things when I’m out & about.

  33. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, you make me sooooooooooooooo jealousssssssssss. There is nothing I like better in this world than to go hunting in Jumble, car boot sales and charity shops. I am trapped in the wrong country, mind the weather is good he, he, he.
At leat let me share you ebay sellings, let me know who you are,so I can buy from you. pleaseeeeeeeeeeeee.
I do not need to wish you a happy weekend, you already are having the best!!!

  34. Amazing find, what a stunning dress, I love the fit and I love the detail. I just love it when there are set prices on things, makes life so much easier and exciting, I never tend to frequent the same carboot, so I’m not familiar with the sellers.
But my local flea market for as long as I’ve known always has a 20p stall, and all the books are 5 for £1.00- my idea of heaven xx

  35. Love it! So tempted to send you £1 in the post and see what you come up with haha x

  39. 20p man? Why is there never a 20p man selling gorgeous vintage clothes in London???
This dress feels a bit Jane Eyre to me - its lovely - I really am finding the image of you charging a stall against the grannies of Tipton quite amusing!
